Is There Such a Thing as a Jewish Christian?
The phrase "Jewish Christian" sounds contradictory, doesn't it? Nic Lesmeister, who directs the Gateway Center for Israel, sheds some light on why Gateway prefers to use other phrases to describe Jewish believers in Jesus.
Something a lot of people have wondered about is, is there such thing as a Jewish Christian?
Now, this is a term that has been used in the past to represent a Jewish person who has put their faith in Jesus. And largely it’s a term that we would not use here at Gateway Center for Israel. We would say a Jewish follower of Jesus. Some people would even say Messianic Jew. But there is such thing as a Jewish Christian in the sense that there can be Jewish people who put their faith in Jesus. But we would discourage people from using the term Jewish Christian, because in some ways it’s a bit of a dichotomy. They are still Jewish. They have put their faith in Jesus, but we want them to continue to identify as a Jewish follower of the Jewish Messiah, Jesus. So yes, there can be such thing as a Jewish Christian, but it’s just someone Jewish who’s put their faith in Jesus.
