So this is a comment that we’ve gotten a lot, and it’s basically, was Martin Luther really anti-Jewish or was he just righteously angry? Some comments said he was just frustrated because the Jewish people were works by faith, and that frustrated him. And I get the temptation to want to say, maybe we’re reading this wrong because we all fail and we all fall short. And, hey, I am so thankful that God can use me even though I have blind spots, even though I’m a sinner. And we’ve done articles and videos about the hidden evil of Martin Luther, and we don’t use that term lightly. We’re not throwing evil on people. And so it’s created this response of is it really fair to call him evil?
And that doesn’t mean we are negating everything he ever did. We’re not a cancel culture where we’re going to say everything he did was wrong because God used him in amazing ways during the Protestant reformation. However, we have to read what he wrote. And it’s also important to note that this wasn’t something that he said offhand in an interview once. This is his calculated written word that he wrote and then published. He said, may the Jewish houses be razed and destroyed. …all their prayer books and Talmudic writings in which such idolatry lies, cursing, blasphemies are taught, be taken from them. …rabbis be forbidden to teach henceforth on pain of loss of life and limb. Even if they were punished in the most gruesome manner, that their streets ran with their blood, that their dead would be counted not in the hundreds of thousands, but in the millions… …they still must insist on being right.
I’m sorry, that’s not righteous anger. That’s demonic and is demonic because I believe that the devil hates anything God chooses. And when God says, I’m choosing Israel, and he calls them all throughout scripture, the special treasure, the apple of his eye, his inheritance, my people. Well, if God says those are my people, the enemy’s going to want to destroy that because he hates God. He’s the enemy of God.
So yes, Martin Luther was not all bad in everything he did, but no, this wasn’t righteous anger. This is a very real side of him that is often not talked about, that is evil. And we have to be able to hold those things in tension and say, this was good, but what he did here and how he thought about the Jewish people, that was evil. And we’re not going to stand for it.
